Phase 1 Orthodontics

Orthodontist For Children Milford, mi

We may recommend that your child start Phase 1 orthodontics if they have a moderate or severe problem that’ll only worsen with time. Since Phase 1 orthodontics typically happens between the ages of six and ten, it’s also called “early interceptive treatment.”

Some common examples of Phase 1 orthodontics include partial braces, wearing an active retainer, or using a palatal expander. This is all done before all of your child’s permanent teeth have erupted.

WHAT’S THE GOAL OF PHASE 1 ORTHODONTICS?

Our ultimate goal is to create space in your child’s jaw for their permanent adult teeth to erupt. We also focus on improving the function and development of your child’s jaws. For example, your child’s jaws may be growing too fast or slow. Dr. Siara-Olds will help ensure that your child’s jaws are growing at the optimal speed for their development.

By intervening early, we’re able to prevent a lot of oral health problems in the long run. Also, keep in mind we may not be able to correct a severe condition with braces alone once all the adult teeth erupt.

This may mean that your child will need more invasive and expensive treatments later in life. For example, patients who don’t receive Phase 1 orthodontics may later need jaw surgery or dental extraction.

HOW LONG DOES PHASE 1 TREATMENT LAST?

In general, you can expect your child’s Phase 1 treatment to last between 9 and 18 months. But it’s important to remember that each child’s orthodontic needs are different. Dr. Siara-Olds will be able to give you an accurate timeline during your child’s consultation.

After Phase 1 treatment, we’ll have your child wear a retainer and check up on them every 4 to 6 months. Once all or most of your child’s permanent teeth have erupted, we’ll recommend that they start Phase 2 treatment. Typically, this is around the ages of 11 and 13.
